    REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES

We will have Remembrance Day Poppy merchandise to sell this week at St Ita’s with a price range from $1 to $5. School leaders will take the merchandise around to each grade to sell.

     HEAD LICE AT SCHOOL

As we come into the warmer months we have some cases of headlice happening within different levels at our school.

To stop a severe outbreak could girls please use a hair tie as outlined in our summer uniform policy and could we ask all students to refrain from sharing hats.

    CHICKENPOX OUTBREAK AT ST ITA’S

Please find below a summary of our discussion regarding the exclusion of cases and contacts of chickenpox at school/childcare centre. I have also linked the relevant legislation and factsheets, and vaccination advise to distribute to parents and staff.

    EXCLUSION:

    • Legislated under the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019 (Schedule 7) - link provided below
    • Cases of chickenpox in primary schools and children’s services centres must be excluded until all blisters have dried. This is usually at least five days after the rash appears in unimmunised children but may be less in previously immunised children. Note that some remaining scabs are not a reason for continued exclusion. Cases in secondary school are recommended to be excluded as above, but there is no statutory exclusion.
    • Child contacts with an immune deficiency (for example, leukaemia) or receiving chemotherapy should be excluded from school or children’s services centre for their own protection. Otherwise, contacts are not excluded.

    INFORMATION:

    • Provide health information regarding transmission, signs and symptom prevention and treatment, refer to Chickenpox factsheet – link provided below
    • All parents and staff should be alert to the potential for exposed (especially unimmunised) children to develop illness 2-3 weeks following exposure and to exclude them at first sign of illness.
    • Pregnant or immunocompromised staff who could have been in close contact with the cases should seek advice from their GP.

    VACCINATION:

    • Vaccination reduces the likelihood of chickenpox infection and can lessen severity of the disease. Vaccination of exposed persons during outbreaks has shown to prevent further cases and control outbreaks.
    • Identify and record details of non-immune children and staff (i.e., those who have never had chickenpox illness or are unvaccinated for chickenpox).
    • In outbreak settings (2 cases within 21 days at the school), recommend vaccination for all non-immune children and staff in the same classroom (if cases are confined to the same classroom) or same year level or entire school/childcare centre (if cases are in multiple classrooms).
    • A second dose of a varicella vaccine is recommended for children under 14 years of age who have received only one varicella vaccine. The second dose provides additional protection and minimises the risk of breakthrough varicella. However, a second dose of a varicella vaccine for children is not funded on the National Immunisation Program. Parents and careers should discuss this option with their GP.
    • Post exposure vaccination should be administered within 5 days, and preferably within 3 days, after exposure.
    • Immunosuppressed people or pregnant women should not be given the varicella vaccine, and anyone receiving the vaccine should avoid becoming pregnant for at least 28 days after vaccination.

ST ITA’S MOBILE PHONE AND SMARTWATCH POLICY

Last week we finalised our student Mobile Phone, Smart Watch Policy for parents and students to sign off on. We sent the policy home to parents and students via hard copy to review, discuss and sign. This is an important policy to have in place in our school due to the legal ramifications that can occur with social media devices like Mobile Phones and Smart Watches and is designed so that all students feel safe at St Ita’s. If your child has a mobile phone or a smart watch at school could I please ask that you read the policy with your child and support them to understand why we have it in place at St Ita’s. The policy is outlined below for everyone in our learning community.

WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH TO POSITIVE BEHAVIORS AWARD

    Positive_Behaviour.png

Commencing from our next assembly, we will be replacing the Student of the Week Award with the Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviours (WSAPB) Award. Children who consistently display Teamwork, Resilience, Respect, Inclusiveness and Compassion in their daily schooling will be nominated by the teachers and peers and the School Executive will select 1-2 students each assembly to be the recipient.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL/ST ITA'S PRIMARY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS GIFT APPEAL 2022

Christmas is quickly approaching with just six weeks left of our school year. In past years, the families of St. Ita’s have helped bring joy and hope with donations of gifts to children in less fortunate situations within the wider community, at Christmas time. This charitable act invites you, as a family, to be involved in a simple, hands-on project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus Christ, God’s greatest gift.

Last year we were able to support well over 200 children that are under the care of St. Vincent de Paul within our Parish and local areas, and we have been asked if we are able to help a similar number again this year.

This year, families who wish to support our “Christmas Gift Appeal” will have the options of either purchasing their own gift in their chosen store for a child/children aged between 0 - 13 years, or by visiting the Warragul Toyworld to purchase a gift and leave them there to be collected. Alternately, families can donate an amount of money to an account held at Toyworld and a St. Vinnies’ member will select toys to the value of any financial donations.

Please do not wrap your gifts as they will need to be sorted and labelled for the appropriate aged child. Our school Mini Vinnies Team will be assisting the St Vincent de Paul team with this, this year. Simply pop your gift into a gift box or a Christmas gift bag and drop it into the school to be placed under the Christmas tree in the foyer.

It is preferred where possible for you and your children to select gifts, to give children the important life lesson of the joy of giving to others.

We will require all gifts to be dropped in to the school by Wednesday, 7th December at the latest, for collection by the St Vincent de Paul team.

Please support the St Vincent de Paul team to continue their work in our Community, the need this year is greater than ever.

Thank you all for your continued support, and a happy and blessed Christmas to all.

    ALL SAINTS DAY

Many classes held All Saints Day prayer services last week. Some of our Grade 6 students also visited some of our middle and junior classes to inform them about the Saints they researched and chose for their Confirmation names. They were informative and did an excellent job capably answering questions that the younger children asked.

    PARISH NEWS

    Witness Opportunities!

    0911.jfif

Much of “the News” would have us believe all is “doom and gloom” But standing back and getting things in perspective we see that isn’t so. In spite of challenges, difficulties, shames, injustices, unfairnesses and embarrassments we have it pretty good! And what a great time to be a Christian!

We have beautiful churches, the fruit of God’s blessings to us, freedom to worship God in our churches and in our lives and the ability to reach out to those in difficulties, exercising tolerance and openness with those who are different.

There is no denying we Christians confront some complex matters, distractions and diversions we need to deal with. At times waves of anti-religious antagonism crash around us and Christians in other lands suffer actual persecution.

Christianity is often belittled and sometimes even despised in the general media. Our personal faith and the Christianity which has underpinned our nation is under considerable challenge. Values that seemed so obvious they were non-issues a generation ago have been turned on their heads by indisputable new understandings of the world. Christians though have a fundamental understanding of creation and our relationship with the Creator which is enhanced through re-evaluation and re-contextualisation in the light of modern knowledge.

Malachi, writing about four centuries before Christ, dealt with complex social issues as we do, and reassures us in the Lord’s name that all will be well, while Paul reminds the Thessalonians to stay focussed and to live simply and, in the gospel, Jesus urges us not to “drop our bundle” in the face of challenges, wars, revolutions, natural disasters and other fearful sights and circumstances.

These are new opportunities, as Jesus tells us in our gospel (Lk 21:5-19), “to bear witness.” This is our chance to stand tall, living our lives, quietly and faithfully as examples to all. In this way we will find salvation ourselves and conversion of our fellow citizens.
