TAKE TIME OUT

 “Jesus did not come to found a new religion called Christianity. He came to show people how to be more fully human in relationship with a loving God and one another” (Treston, K. The Wind Blows Where It Chooses p44). This Sunday’s readings offer insight into Jesus’ mission purpose.

Paul reminds us that God knows a thing or two about humans, “For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom” (1 Cor 1:25a). The Old Testament reading from Exodus includes the Ten Commandments as well as God’s plan for us to make some God time in our lives. That is what his instructions for the Sabbath are about.

A day set aside for rest and reflection with God meant something in Jesus’ time (though even then Jesus found people abusing God’s time and place as in today’s gospel where he drives the money changers and pigeon sellers and sheep and cattle out of the temple.) (John 2:13-25). Ordinary Galileans relished the Sabbath as a toil-free blessing from God; a remembrance of God’s goodness to them. In Christianity too, until living memory, Sunday was a day reserved for resetting our relationship with God and others; refreshing and refocussing for the coming week.  No shops, no footy, no options; just God time and family time.

How far we have strayed from God’s Law given at Sinai!: “For six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath for the Lord your God.” (Ex 20:1-17). God gave us the best way but we engage with the world as we find it. Parents find Sunday (or Saturday) Mass times that fit with basketball or work etc. Still though God urges us to maintain our spiritual, physical and mental health, living fully in relationship with God and each other.

    compassion.jpg

    Compassion is a non-judgmental emotion that we practice to ease pain and show genuine love to one another. Here are 8 ways you can positively impact someone’s day using skills like empathy, patience and understanding.

    Be considerate

    Be equally considerate to friends, family and strangers. Listen fully without judgment, and give each person your full attention (no texting, no phone calls, no seeming to be bored!)– use direct eye contact and keep your ears open to their needs.

    Be affectionate

    Sometimes all people really need is a loving touch, a sincere hug, or a warm smile. Simple gestures of affection, even a pat on the hand, help ease strain and show your genuine compassion.

    Communicate in a warm way

    Let your genuine interest in helping the other person show through heart felt communication. You can make a world of difference by simply listening and talking in a warm, patient manner. Use encouraging vocabulary, be optimistic and concentrate on showing complete understanding.

    Show empathy

    Empathy is showing that you understand another’s feelings or emotions; you identify with the situation and care enough to place yourself in another’s shoes. “I understand” is a great way to communicate this.

    Be selfless

    To help someone else you have to take your own needs out of the equation. Put your focus and energy on the other person, be selfless, and limit any distractions or personal goals as long as you are committed to the needs of another.

    Practice acts of kindness

    Go out of your way to be kind. You can treat someone to small things like a new book, frozen yoghurt, or just a laugh to brighten even the toughest of days.  You can also volunteer your time, offering to babysit, run errands, etc. for anyone with a lot of weight on their shoulders.

    Send a meaningful message

    Send compassionate feelings via a simple text message to someone you care about.  Just tell them you were thinking of them and you love them.  A simple way to show they matter to you.

    Show unconditional love

    This is a total approach towards showing compassion in every area of life. Don’t just hear, but listen without judgment, be extremely present in the conversation, give sound advice, offer your hugs and love freely. Be understanding and above all, love unconditionally.

    While compassionate action is second nature to some, anyone can learn to use these skills to make any family, friends and strangers feel a little happier and feel a little more loved each day.

    STUDENT LEARNING SUPPORT AT ST ITA'S

    This year St Ita's has refined its Learning Support for all students across our school. To support students and ensure they have the best opportunity for targeted teaching at their level of learning we will provide:

    • Levelled Literacy Intervention (LLI) in Grades 1-2;
    • Rainbow Reading Grades 2-3;
    • Headsprouts Reading Program delivered in the Grades 2-6. The Headsprouts program is designed to improve kids' reading skills at various levels, from non-readers and early readers to established readers, reading above their current grade level;
    • Numeracy Extension in Grades 5-6;
    • An ongoing commitment to extending and supporting all children within the classroom via teaching to their specific point of need.

    As well as this, we continue to invest in our nine wonderful Education Support Staff who work tirelessly to assist our teachers with their programs and work to support our learners.

    COVID -19 TUTOR PROGRAM

    As some parents may be aware, the Victorian State Government has provided funding for schools to implement a Tutor Learning Program. Schools across the state have received varying amounts of funding to be used to provide support for students whose learning has been impacted throughout periods of remote learning.

    There are a number of important considerations that must be taken into account before embarking on this initiative. Firstly, and most importantly, we need to ensure we accurately identify student needs and determine whether a student would benefit from this support.

    On the basis of this information we can then determine the best approach to meet the needs of all of our students and deliver the best “Bang for our Buck”.

    In order to begin the Tutor Learning Program, we need to ensure we have appropriate staffing. The school is currently in the process of employing new staff to undertake this work. In the coming weeks Staff will look at 2020 student data, current levels of student support as well as the social and emotional impacts that Covid had on specific children to identify those who will be able to access the Tutoring Program.

    Once we have established a list of eligible students to access the Tutor program, St Ita’s teaching staff will contact you and outline what we will be offering these students onsite.

    The Tutor Learning Program is for the 2021 school year and we are determined to ensure it has the best opportunity to have a positive impact on our students.

    library_bags.jpg

    I have been so happy with the number of library bags coming into the library!

    Borrowing is part of our library lesson each week and is a great opportunity for your child to borrow a book to read at home.

    I Keep our collection current which makes borrowing time even more exciting!!

    With books being purchased regularly, I’m after a few new volunteers to cover them.

    Volunteers.jpg

    What’s involved?

    Take home a small bag of books once a term to cover.

    We provide quality covering and you can do it in the comfort of your home. (These are mostly soft cover books.)

    If you are available to help us out, please email me at cmckenna@stidrouin.catholic.edu.au

    Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about our library lessons also.

    Thanks,

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS

    Physical Education in 2021 has begun with lots of fun and games. The start of each year is an opportunity for the students to participate in a variety of inclusive individual and team based minor games. These games help develop a variety of Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS) and provide an opportunity for the children to work on teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship.

    In their few lessons, Foundation students participated in games without equipment. They have now progressed to using some balls, bean bags, hula hoops and the large parachute.

    Grade 1 and 2 students are currently working hard on their kicking and soccer skills, whilst the Grade 3-6’s are preparing for the upcoming Senior Athletics Carnival on Friday 12th March.

    Whilst the 5 day lockdown has made things more difficult as we lost one lesson, all of the main events will be covered in PE prior to the day (Sprint, Hurdles, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus). For many of the Grade 3 students, this is their first experience of throwing a discus and putting a shot.

    Wishing all the students the very best for the day. May they participate to the best of their ability and display great school and house spirit!

    SPORT NEWS - Swimming

    Congratulations to 17 senior students that qualified to participate in the Division Swimming Carnival today at the Warragul Outdoor Pool against other schools in the West Gippsland area. Everyone swam amazingly and gave it their best with a few ribbons won on the day! Well done to all. Stay tuned to see who has qualified to swim in the Regional Carnival next!
